Lesson plans for World Cup soccer

Last Friday, I did speech-language therapy with middle school students for extended school year (ESY). There were 4 classes (2 mild-moderate and 2 severe) in which I delivered whole class lessons. I designed 2 lesson plans incorporating a World Cup soccer theme. Here are the activities, materials, and goals addressed:

Mild-Moderate Classes
1) Introductions for social language
2) World Cup YouTube video for establishing background knowledge
3) Pre-teaching of vocabulary and information
4) News-2-You World Cup Soccer (Higher) newspaper for answering comprehension questions and vocabulary with a printed communication board from Proloquo2Go
5) Retell for grammer and recall
6) Real Soccer 2010 app on iPod touch for gesture controls and reward

Severe Classes
1) Introductions for social language with TapSpeak Button on iPad
2) World Cup YouTube video for establishing background knowledge
3) Pre-teaching of vocabulary and information with Proloquo2Go on iPad
4) News-2-You World Cup Soccer (Simple) newspaper for answering comprehension questions and vocabulary with Proloquo2Go on iPad
5) News-2-You knock-knock joke for social language with TapSpeak Button on iPad
6) Bloom & Air Hockey apps on iPad for gesture controls and rewards

I have to briefly mention how I utilized Real Soccer 2010 ($.99) with the mild-moderate classes. With 6 iPod touches, the students were grouped to play 3 multi-player Wi-Fi games. In other words, 2 students at a time played a Wi-Fi game with as many devices. The students had a blast, and were so amazed at how they could play each other via wireless Internet. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them use technology that many of them don’t typically access.
